Minutes of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee

  1. The Pulp and Paper Engineering Program and the Schools of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering requested the renumbering of the following courses and cross-listing:
  2. ChE/MS 4763 Pulping and Chemical Recovery (formerly ChE 4571)

    ChE/MS 4764 Bleaching and Papermaking (formerly ChE 4572)

    A motion was made to approve the courses. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  3. The Pulp and Paper Engineering Program requested approval of the certificate in Pulp and Paper. This is the semester conversion of the quarter certificate. A motion was made to approve the certificate. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0)
  4. The School of Literature, Communication and Culture requested the approval of the following courses:
  5. LCC 3401 Technical Communication Practices 2-0-2

    LCC 2116 Science, Technology and Postmodernism 3-0-3 (Humanities credit)

    A motion was made to approve the courses. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  6. The School of Literature, Communication and Culture requested the approval of the following certificate programs:
  7. Certificate in Film Studies (conversion of certificate in Film and Drama from quarters)

    Certificate in American Studies (conversion of certificate in American Literature from quarters)

    Certificate in American Literary and Cultural Studies

    A motion was made to approve the certificates. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  8. It was decided that all requests for overloads for Summer 2000 be made by petition to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee as required in the Student Rules and Regulations. In the past, the Registrar had approved overloads under predetermined stipulations.
  9. The College of Computing requested the approval of the following courses:
  10. CS 4255 Introduction to Network Management 3-0-3

    CS 4665 Educational Technology: Design and Evaluation 3-0-3

    A motion was made to approve CS 4255, Introduction to Network Management. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

    A motion was made to table the request for approval of CS 4665 Educational Technology: Design and Evaluation. The request did not indicate that the course had ever been offered as a Special Topics. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  11. The Department of Modern Languages requested the approval of the following courses:
  12. JAPN 1801-02 Special Topics 3-0-3

    A motion was made to send the request back to the department because the committee did not understand the necessity of setting up a Special Topics number to offer an approved course on the web. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  13. The Department of Modern Languages requested the approval of the following courses:
  14. GRMN 3801-2 Special Topics in German 3-0-3

    GRMN 3901 Special Problems in German Variable Hours

    A motion was made to approve the courses adding a pass/fail and audit option. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  15. The department of Modern Languages requested the approval of the following courses:
  16. SPAN 1801, 2801, 3801, 3802, 4801, 4802 Special Topics in Spanish 3-0-3

    A motion was made to send the request back to the Department for additional information and a correction of the numbering of the courses. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  17. The School of Physics informed the Committee that PHYS 2501 will revert back to the originally approved number of PHYS 2211 and PHYS 2502 will revert back to the originally approved number of PHYS 2112, Summer semester, 2000. The topics in the courses have been changed to reflect the new numbers, and bring courses in line with the typical course organization at other universities and colleges.
  18. The Dupree College of Management requested the approval of the Certificate in Accounting. This is the semester conversion of the quarter certificate. After discussion, a motion was made to approve the certificate. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).
  19. The Dupree College of Management requested the approval of the Certificate in Information Technology Management. This is the semester conversion of the quarter certificate. A motion was made to approve the certificate. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).
  20. The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering requested the following course:
  21. CEE 3055 Structural Analysis 3-0-3

    This is a new course number for CEE 3050 (2-3-3) and reflects a change in the lab-hour configuration of the course. CEE 3055 will replace CEE 3050 in the BSCE degree requirements. A motion was made to approve the course and the change in the BSCE degree requirements. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).

  22. The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs requested participation in the Institute's Graduate Course Option Program to be implemented in Fall 2000. The request will also be made to the Institute Graduate Committee. A motion was made to approve the request. The motion was seconded and approved (11-0-0).
  23. The next meeting will be April 12, 2000 at 3:15 p.m. and sub-committee will meet April 10th at 3:00 p.m.
