Student Regulation Committee

Meeting of September 16, 1999

 

Present: Fred Andrew (Math), Kent Barefield (Chem/Biochem), Paul Benkeser (Chair/ECE/BMED), Robert Hill (SGA/U Student), Deborah Johnson (Public Policy), Nick Lalwani (SGA/U Student), Alan Larson (ME), Peter McGuire (Exc. Bd. Lia./LCC), Frank Roper (Registrar), and Lee Wilcox (VPSA).

Absent: William Bullock (Arch), Cherie Courseault (SGA/G Sudent)

Visitors: Heather Duke (U Student), Ian Queen (SGA/U Student), and Scott Verzyl (Registrar).

 

1. The minutes of the committee meeting of June 30, 1999 were approved.

2. Paul Benkeser, ECE, was elected as Chair, and Alan Larson, ME, was elected as Secretary, for AY 1999-2000.

  1. The committee accepted for the record the attached memo from Lisa Nickel, Alumni Association. The memo gives the minutes of a July 14, 1999 meeting of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association on the final exam exemption issue (Attachment 1).
  2. A draft report On the Matter of Final Examinations, written by Benkeser and Larson, and covering the committee's activities on the exemption of degree candidates from exams during finals week in their term of graduation was discussed and modified.
  3. The committee accepted for the record the attached draft by Nikhil Lalwani, (SGA/U Student), of remarks by him at the meeting of Sept. 16, 1999 (Attachment 2).
  4. The committee then voted on four options dealing with Section XII.C. of the student rules and regulations:

A degree candidate will be exempted from examinations during final examination week in the term of graduation.

Option 1. Do not repeal Section XII.C.

Option 2. Repeal Section XII.C. Give "blank" diplomas to both undergraduate and graduate degree candidates at the graduation ceremony immediately following finals week. The Registrarís Office will mail diplomas when certified.

Option 3. Revise Section XII.C. to read "An undergraduate degree candidate will be exempted from examinations during final examination week in the term of graduation." Give "blank" diplomas to graduate degree candidates at the graduation ceremony immediately following finals week. The Registrar's Office will mail diplomas when certified to graduate degree candidates.

Option 4. Repeal Section XII.C. Give certified diplomas to all degree candidates at a delayed graduation ceremony approximately one week after finals week.

  1. The voting members voted orally, in turn, and expressed reasons for their decision.

The votes were:

Benkeser, Option 2.

Johnson, Option 2.

Larson, Option 2.

  1. The voting is to be incorporated into the draft of the committee report to the Academic Senate. The draft is to be circulated to the committee by the chair for comment. Then the chair will submit the final report to the Academic Senate.
