November 26, 2002

PRESENT: Begovic (ECE), Johnson (ML), Kurtis (CE), McIver (REG), Usselman HTS)

VISITORS: Bramblett (IRP)

1.      Chairman Begovic discussed the report that the Committee should be preparing for the Executive Board. The Committee agreed that there should be an Executive Summary, a limited amount of data with most of the data in the appendix, and an Overview.

2.      Sandy Bramblett gave an overview of the data that she had collected concerning GPA inflation. Her data was a high overview and the Committee discussed other data that could be used such as: weighted data by FTE, part-time faculty and admissions index (see attached).

3.      Chairman Begovic continued the discussion of the charge with the #6 and #7 items being the most important points to be considered. Points discussed by the Committee included:

Grade inflation is the movement from C & B to A, a compression at the top of the curve.

Is there any relationship between course evaluations and grades?

Is there grade inflation to avoid dealing with students?

Does pre-tenue/post tenure have an affect on grading?

Do we need any more peer data to address #2?

4.      The basic outline for the report should include:

Is there grade inflation at Georgia Tech?
