MINUTES OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MEETING

October 29, 2001

1.      A motion was made to approve the minutes of August 20, 2001 and September 10, 2001 meetings.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

2.      Lakshmi Sankar, Chair of the Studies Abroad Sub-Committee presented the minutes of the October 8, 2001 and October 25, 2001 meetings.  After review of the minutes, a motion was made to approve.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

3.      The SCHOOL OF BIOLOGY requested approval of the following new course. A motion was made to approve the course.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

NEW COURSE

BIOL 4600 Evolution    3-0-3

4.      The SCHOOL OF HISTORY, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY requested approval of the following new course.  A motion was made to approve the course.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

NEW COURSE

HTS 3019   The Family, Sexuality and Social Change in America  3-0-3.  This course will count as a Social Science elective.  Equivalent to quarter course, HIST 3035.

5.      The SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING requested approval of changes to the list of elective courses for the minor in Biomedical Engineering.  A motion was made to approve the changes.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

6.      The COLLEGE OF ARCHITECHTURE requested the approval of the following new courses.  A motion was made to approve the courses.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

NEW COURSES

ARCH 4128  Barcelona:  Architecture, Urban Design, Public Space 3-0-3.  This course will count as a Humanities elective.

ARCH 4127 Introduction to Art and Architecture in Italy   1-0-1

7.      The DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE SCIENCES requested that the name of the department be changed to APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY.  After discussion, a motion was made to support the change.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

8.      The WOODRUFF SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING requested the following new courses and modification to the BS in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering.  A motion was made to approve the courses and changes.  The motion was seconded and approved. 

NEW COURSES

NRE 4328  Radiation Sources and Applications  3-0-3

NRE 3112 Nuclear Radiation Detection   2-3-3

Make inactive NRE 3111, NRE 4316 and NRE 4326.

 

Modify the degree requirements for the BS in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering as follows:

Delete NRE 3111 (2), NRE 4316 (3) and NRE 4326 (3)

Add NRE 3112 (3), NRE 4328 (3) and a technical elective (3)

Net increase of 1 hour (to 126) required for the degree

9.      The SCHOOL OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING requested the approval of the following new courses and modification to the BS in Aerospace Engineering.  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

NEW COURSES

AE 3515   Systems Dynamics and Control   4-0-4

AE 4525  Control System Design Laboratory   1-3-2

Make inactive AE 3520 and AE 4520

Modify the degree requirements for the BS in Aerospace Engineering as follows:

Delete AE 3520 and AE 4520

Add AE 35155 and AE 4525

There is no change in the number of hours required for the degree.

10.  The SCHOOL OF EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES requested the following new courses and modifications to the BS in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. A motion was made to approve the courses and changes to the degree. The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

Modify the degree requirements for the BS in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences as follows:

Delete: EAS 2650 (4), EAS 3601 (5),EAS 3602 (5) and EAS 2602 (3)  - 17 hours

Add: EAS 2655 (3), EAS 3620 (4), EAS 3630 (3), EAS 3640 (2), EAS 3641 (1) EAS 3650 (3) and one hour of free elective.  - 17 hours

There is no change in the number of degree hours required.
