  1. A motion was made to approve a request from The Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering for a revision to the Minor in BME. The motion was seconded and approved.

·         Minor in Biomedical Engineering

·         Reduction of the total hours required from 18 to 15

·         Addition of an alternative course for each of the two courses required for the minor

·         Addition of five courses to the list of approved electives

  1. The Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering notified the Committee of changes in prerequisites to the following courses effective Fall 2009.  The changes were recorded with no concerns expressed.

·         BMED 3300: Prerequisites BMED 2210 (w/ minimum grade of C) and MATH 2403

·         BMED 4600: Prerequisites BMED 3610 (w/concurrency) AND BMED 3510 (w/concurrency)

  1. A motion was made to approve a request from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for new courses.  The motion was seconded and approved.

NEW COURSES

EAS 3610 Introduction to Geophysics 3-0-3*

EAS 4110 Resources, Energy, and the Environment 3-0-3

 

*A request will be submitted to deactivate the existing course that is being replaced with this new one.

 

  1. The Committee acknowledged the withdrawal of the proposal for a new course, EAS 4490 Advanced Environmental Data Analysis 3-0-3 from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

 

  1. A motion was made to approve a request from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for modifications to the degree program.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

Expansion of the “C or better requirement”: 

 

Currently, a C or better is required in:

a.       MATH 1501 and 1502

b.      Physics 2211

c.       Chemistry 1310

d.      CS 1371 and

e.       Biology 1510 or 1520. 

 

Effective with the 2009 Catalog, a C or better will be required in all prerequisite courses:

a.       MATH 1501,1502, 2401, and 2403

b.      Physics 2211 and 2212

c.       Chemistry 1310, 1311 and 1312

d.      CS 1371

e.       Biology1510 or 1520 

The Committee noted that the impact of such a change can be significant and that the School should be mindful of the implications as students make progress to degree completion.

  1. A motion was made to table a request from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for a new course.  The motion was seconded and approved.

NEW COURSE – TABLED

EAS 4480 Environmental Data Analysis 3-0-3

There was considerable discussion about this proposal including concern that all components of it were not outlined in enough detail, particularly the project that will be required of the student.  The request will be resubmitted when the proposal has been revised.

  1. A motion was made to table a request from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences for modifications to the capstone option which included a new course.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

 

TABLED: Expansion of capstone course options:

 

Currently, students are required to take:

a.       EAS 4610 Earth System Modeling

b.      EAS 4420 Environmental Field Methods

Effective with the 2009 Catalog, the requirement will change to the option of 2 out of 3.  These will be:

a.       EAS 4610 Earth System Modeling

b.      EAS 4420 Environmental Field Methods

c.       EAS 4480 Environmental Data Analysis (new course proposal also filed): TABLED

  1. A motion was made to approve a request from the School of History, Technology and Society for changes to the minor. The motion was seconded and approved.

CHANGE TO THE MINOR IN SOCIOLOGY

 

  1. The Program Review Subcommittee met briefly after the items on the agenda were finished to discuss recent changes in procedure.
