Note: All action items in these minutes require approval by the Academic Senate. In some instances, items may require further approval by the Board of Regents or the University System of Georgia. If the Regents' approval is required, the change is not official until notification is received from the Board to that effect.† Academic units should take no action on these items until USG and/or BOR approval is secured. In addition, units should take no action on any of the items below until these minutes have been approved by the Academic Senate or the Executive Board.
All petitions were recommended for approval:
∑ Register for three thesis hours (1)
∑ Change grade mode from letter grade to pass/fail (1)
∑ Substitute 9000 hours for 7000 hours to use toward Masterís Degree Requirements (3)
∑ Graduate without two terms of full enrollment (1)
∑ Waive the two-year limit to the Graduate Course Option (1)
Note: There was quite a lot of discussion about this petition. The petition to the faculty actually requested permission to apply 21 hours of unused course work from the BS toward the MS. The committee reasoned that the student could have used 12 hours of thesis work instead of 6, in which case he would only need 15 hours of unused course work instead of 21. The confusion between and among what appeared on the degree petition and the petition to the faculty and what was actually needed as an exception resulted in a vote on use of 15 hours and a notation to be made on the degree petition that the student is cleared to graduate.† Depending upon how the reasoning occurs on this question, the actual statement of what was needed changes.† Therefore, the Committee made an interpretation and approved the petition accordingly with the proper notation on the degree petition.
