MINUTES OF THE GRADUATE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MEETING

June 30, 2005

 

 

PRESENT: Green (Math), Pikowsky (REG), Smith (AE), Venkateswaran (CC), Parker (ISYE), Doug Allen-filling in for John Peponis (ARCH), Saunders (CEE)

 

VISITORS: Zhou (ECE), Kilroy (Graduate Studies), Brakebill (Math), Potts (Graduate Admissions), Will (CEE), Vidakovic (ISYE), Vito (COE) Huo (ISYE), Williamson (REG)

 

1.       Introductions were done to familiarize the new registrar with the members of the committee and the visitors.

 

2.       A motion was made to approve the minutes of the April 26, 2005 meeting. The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

3.       Aerospace Engineering requested that the basis of AE 4803 QJA, fall 2004 and 4803 QJA, spring 2005 be reset retroactively to correct an error in coding. AE also requested that all grades given in these sections be changed to “S.”  A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

4.       Civil and Environmental Engineering requested approval of two new courses, CEE 6511 Random Vibrations and CE 6549 Structural Reliability. A motion was made to approve the request. The motion was seconded and approved.  Unanimous.

 

5.       Industrial and Systems Engineering requested approval to participate in and award degrees in the interdisciplinary Bioinformatics PhD program. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

6.       Industrial and Systems Engineering requested approval of two new statistics courses, ISyE 6420 and ISyE 6416. A motion was made to approve the request.  The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

7.       Mathematics requested approval of three new courses, Math 8305, 8306, and 8307 for international teaching assistants in Mathematics. The courses will not be used to meet degree requirements. The hours in section 2 of new course proposal form will be adjusted to avoid confusion—it is now listed as 3 lecture hours with 2 semester credits. Mathematics and the Registrar’s Office will resolve the issue. A motion was made to approve the request. The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

8.       Electrical and Computer Engineering requested the establishment of a Dual MS program in ECE with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It was noted that the policy on transfer credit will need to be updated.  It was also noted that other offices such as Graduate Admissions will need to be consulted on operational issues. A motion was made to approve the request. The motion was seconded and approved. Unanimous.

 

9.       The Committee heard and approved one petition to award an undesignated Master’s degree based upon coursework completed 1983-1987.

 

10.   The next meeting will be Thursday, July 28 at 3:00 PM in the College of Sciences Conference Room, Administration Building.
