1. The meeting came to order at 1:05 p.m. on April 7, 2005 in Physics N110.
2. David Frost, Director of Georgia Tech Savannah, gave an overview of programs and enrollment at GT Savannah. The following points were made:
Background. Enrollment in GT Savannah programs is restricted to graduate students and to undergraduate juniors and seniors. Before entering the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program (GTREP) at GT Savannah, undergraduate students must complete the first two years of undergraduate study at one of the GTREP affiliate schools in the UGA System. They may then be admitted to the GTREP program, remaining in residence at their GTREP affiliated schools and taking courses that are typically delivered remotely through GT Savannah.
Enrollment. In Fall of 1999 roughly 20 students were enrolled in undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering; in Fall 2004 roughly 185 students were enrolled, taking undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering as well as graduate courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. To date 95% of students graduating from the program have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and 100% of graduates have obtained jobs, with 65% of those jobs in the Southeast Georgia area.
Facilities. GT Savannah uses seven distributed education classrooms, which are traditional distance-learning classrooms. There are also eleven telecollaboration studios; these are small videoconference centers which permit faculty members in Atlanta, for example, to have face-to-face office hours with students on other campuses. Telecollaboration centers also permit student project teams to hold meetings even when the team members are housed on different campuses.
In addition to remote facilities GT Savannah is also building instructional labs, with ECE instructional labs now complete, CE instructional labs 50% complete and ME instructional labs 25% complete. Roughly 150,000 square feet of building space have been completed thus far, and construction is ongoing. A 1 GB fiber connection to the Atlanta campus is slated to become operational during 2005
Opportunities in Savannah. In addition to the research and business opportunities available at Georgia Tech’s Atlanta campus, Savannah presents numerous opportunities for research in, for example, mapping coastal change and human impact on coastal systems. Savannah also provides opportunities for collaboration with, for example, the Savannah College of Art and Design, The Georgia Ports Authority’s Maritime Logistics Innovation Center, The U.S. Geological Survey’s Savannah Field Office. A variety of Industry Outreach Activities are being pursued in areas of coastal businesses.
