Low student response continues to be a problem with a response rate of less than 40 percent. An Ad-Hoc committee chaired by Anderson Smith is examining the effectiveness of CIOS. Areas of concern include optimizing student response to the web based evaluation, simplifying the current evaluation form and examining alternate methods of evaluating teaching effectiveness. Alternate methods of evaluating teaching effectiveness may include peer evaluation in addition to the input from students. Questions related to the condition of classroom will be removed from the survey.
Currently, there is a shortage of adequately sized classrooms on Campus. This problem has been exacerbated by the change to semesters and classrooms being converted to other uses. The current mix of classrooms with and without technology improvements complicates scheduling. The Office of Capital Planning and Space Management, under Nancy Tinker’s leadership, completed a comprehensive inventory of classrooms including detailed information on the condition of each room. An Ad-Hoc committee appointed by Bob McMath is using this information to determine classroom improvement priorities. Historically this has been one of the responsibilities of the ASC so one or two representatives of this committee will serve on the Ad-Hoc committee. The ASC needs to be a strong advocate of including classrooms in new buildings, improving current facilities and preserving the inventory.
Leadership in this context incorporates skills required for teamwork and cooperative efforts. These skills are based on six principles which are vision, ethics, service, communication, …and … The objective is to incorporate these skills into an adequate number of freshman classes to assure all students benefit. A means of accurately evaluating the effectiveness of leadership needs to be developed. McMath is working on a proposal to the Bradley-Turner Foundation requesting funds for the student leadership initiative at Georgia Tech.
6. The Dean of the Library will be asked to join us at the February meeting of the ASC and discuss his plans for the Library.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 PM.
